THE BIG WAVE ISSUE

Matt-Bromley_Brad-Masters

At no time is surfing heroism more evident than when monster swells pound our shores. And they recently did. Take another look at the cover of this magazine. Despite the griping about what the “Millennium swell” really delivered, and while the whole world seemed to be playing at Padang Padang, the biggest Indonesian wave ever paddled into happened over on Nias.

BILLABONG GROMMET ATTACK SERIES 2

BALI, INDONESIA – Picture perfect Padma Beach delivered the goods in the second leg of the Billabong Grommet Attack 2015 series. 2-3 foot waves rolled in under blue skies and off shore winds, creating a peaceful scene that was in direct contrast to the highly competitive grom action taking place in the water. And indeed they did, with verve and determination, having to be boated out to the distant line-up and then left to paddle in. “That is the physical education element of this contest” laughed parent Cacho Izquierdo, “It’ll put a little meat on their bones”.

BILLABONG GROMMET ATTACK SERIES

The third and final event of the Billabong Grommet Attack 2015 Series finished up on Sunday, 19 July 2015, at Halfway, Kuta Beach, in an exciting showcase of Bali’s best up-and-coming junior surfers. After an amazing run at Padma Beach with great wave selections, the series’ good karma continued with Kuta Beach delivering superb lefts and rights in classic Halfway form. With glassy peeling waves pumping in as if a wave machine produced it, a proud Rahtu Suargita boasted on the microphone “this is Halfway at its best! Thank you Mother Nature for sending us such perfect swell direction!”. The highly competitive Under 16 Boys division was won by Rio Waida, who having missed the Padma event due to being in Australia competing in the Occy Grom Comp was determined to get one over on his buddy Raju Sena who had won both of the previous events – and he did! However, Raju Sena still came home with the Under 16 Boys series championship trophy, lots of goodies, and a smile on his face! Billabong Boss Chris Slattery, commented, “Today was absolutely unreal! Everyone had a great time and that’s exactly how we wanted this event to be.” All the event finalists received goody bags, trophies and IDR3,000,000 gift certificates from Billabong and FCS and a voucher for a 2-night stay at Hotel Neo+ in Kuta-Legian.

With the “Millenium swell”, usually dormant, flat corners of countless protected bays sprung to life. Like short lived phantoms, providing spots that had never been ridden before. Or, as it turns out, since. For those not looking for death waves, it was a bonanza for surfers who had been keeping their eyes on a handful of Indonesian honeypots. Photographed by Trevor Murphy
